HIROSHIMA MON AMOUR (1959) + NUIT ET BROUILLARD (1958) BY ALAIN RESNAIS New River Studios

May 9 @ 7:15 pm

Resnais has always managed to create highly structured films whose purity of form highlights the lack of patterns in the realm of the real.
His films have rarely made it to all-time best lists although, fortunately, there are people who strongly believe they belong there. French director, who made his feature debut Hiroshima mon amour in 1959, has not made it into the canon known today as the French New Wave, so his magisterial body of work, which includes almost twenty feature films and spans over more than half a century, stays well outside all too familiar classifications.
However, one thing is for sure: no other director has done so much and in such an artistically inspiring way to expand and enhance our understanding of motion pictures. He has done so by bringing together unprecedented formal innovation, especially in sound and editing, with exploration of key themes and concept of modernity. Formal inventiveness of his films (Eric Rohmer pronounced him the first modern director of sound cinema) has often shadowed the very fact that Resnais is the pioneer author in dealing with the concepts of time and memory on film. Time and memory figure as keys to understanding his work on both formal and topical level. (Visnja Pentic)
